2013-04-23 Canadian Solar Industries Association & GCCIC Symposium: Building Integrated PV Symposium – Allstream, Toronto, ON

AHK Kanada

The German Canadian Chamber of Industry and Commerce joined forces to present a high quality day long forum on Building Integrated Solar Photovoltaics at the newly refurbished historic Allstream Centre at Toronto’s Exhibition Place.

The event featured both leading Canadian and German experts on the application of building integrated photovoltaic technologies to generate power and create exciting aesthtics treatments to both vintage historic buildings and to cutting-edge innovative new building structures of all scales.

The event highlighted the rapid development of the technology in Northern Europe and East Asia compared with the far more modest pace of the technologies growth in North America. Examples of BIPV structures varying from the Canadian government building in Yellowknife, the Manitoba Hydro tower in Winnipeg and an upscale private home in the village of Eastman in Quebec’s Eastern Townships area.

A large number of universities and government offices have taken a strong interest in Canada’s solar sector including Concordia University (Montreal), Ryerson University (Toronto), Natural Resources Canada, Ontario Ministry of Energy, City of Toronto and The Living City at Kortright.

The home in Eastman was of particular interest because it illustrated the potential of BIPV incorporated into the rooftop shingling system of residential homes across Canada. At the conference I met the inventor and distributor of a brand new solar pv system that can be installed directly onto the pitched roofs of existing or new roofs. I believe that this LUMA Solar PV roofing system has enormous potential both with new and existing homes across Canada, but especially with remote off-grid First First Nation, military and mining communities scattered across Canada’s north. Jurisdictions like Ontario that have or are contemplating generous Ontario Feed In Tariff guaranteed payment contracts, like the ones offered by the Ontario Power Authority and the province’s Local Distribution Companies (utilities) have the benefit of future cash flow as well as the a source of clean green power. We all have much to look forward to from this emerging renewable energy innovation

2013-04-18 – Burlington, ON – “Beyond Windows & Doors” – Construction Specification Canada, Hamilton-Niagara Chapter presents Leon Wasser MBA, PEng.

BEYOND WINDOWS & DOORS:

INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS TO ENHANCE BUILDING OPENINGS

CONSTRUCTION SPECIFICATION CANADA
HAMILTON/NIAGARA CHAPTER
LUNCHEON PRESENTATION
Thursday, April 18, 2013, 11:30 am
Royal Canadian Legion, 828 Legion Road, Burlington, Ontario

Canadian specification professionals do a great job of selecting optimal wall insulation, window and door systems to meet the increasing stringent demands of architects, engineers, building codes and clients to provide high insulation ratings, durable finishes and practical maintenance characteristics. Some building owners and building operators are asking, what more can I to enhance my building envelope? This presentation will focus on several additional technologies that can be incorporated into your specifications for either new construction or for facility retrofits. Technologies to be presented will include:

HanitaTek Security Window Films:

Unfortunately buildings are at risk from an increasing number of perils, and it is clear that the most vulnerable area of the building skin is its windows. Security window films can make panes more resistant to environmental damage, explosion, accidents and deliberate actions.

HanitaTek Privacy Window Films:

Standard windows are designed to be transparent but often building occupants and management. Needs certain building areas to be given some degree of privacy, without a complete loss of natural light or the need for major modifications.

HanitaTek Solar Window Films:

Solar window films are designed to selectively reduce the transmission of welcome natural sunlight while shielding the building by selectively reflecting light which generates heat which then needs to be expelled by the facility’s air conditioning system. The highest inflow of solar input in July and August coincides, and not accidentally, with the electricity’s systems highest peak loads.

Heat Saving Systems Air Curtains & Air Doors:

Air curtains can conserve energy, increase occupant comfort and reduce the risk of slip and fall due to floors made wet through the infiltration of snow and rain. Air curtains come in three basic models, electrically heated, hot water heated or ambient (ambient). Different floor or wall mounted units are available for pedestrian doors, underground parking garage doors and freight doors.

HanitaTek Anti-Graffiti Film for Exterior Finished Walls:

Urban areas in particular are vulnerable to graffiti and deliberate or accidental damage of external finished walls and street furniture. A sacrificial film can be mounted directly on a metallic, polished stone or other smooth finished wall to provide a protective damage resistant covering that can be easily replaced as required, with no harm to the underlying surface.

Heat Saver Insulating Window Shades:

Even high R-value glazing has limitations on its ability to eliminate the loss of building heat through windows. The addition of attractive insulated window shades can further reduce building heat loss and simultaneously improve the occupant comfort in the direct vicinity of exterior windows.
